🧠Caring for the Mind: How to Stay Mentally Sharp

Staying mentally sharp as we age is possible – with the right support, routines, and care.
At Angel Carers, we support many older adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. While these conditions can be challenging, there is growing evidence that certain lifestyle changes can make a real difference.
Last week, the Alzheimer’s Association announced a turning point in what we know about brain health. They shared a major breakthrough: a large-scale US study revealed that lifestyle changes – including exercise, healthy eating and brain stimulation – can meaningfully improve cognitive function in seniors.
Here’s how you can use this knowledge to support your loved ones every day.
1. Move More, Think Better
The study found that older adults who engaged in regular physical activity had better cognitive performance than those who didn’t.
Care Tips:
- Encourage your loved one to walk daily, do light stretching, or join a senior fitness class.
- Even gentle movement – like gardening or dancing – can help boost circulation and brain function.
- Angel Carers’ support workers can help create safe, enjoyable routines for mobility.
2. Feed the Brain with the MIND Diet
The participants followed the MIND diet – a blend of the Mediterranean and DASH diets – rich in leafy greens, berries, nuts, fish, and whole grains.
Care Tips:
- Prepare meals with spinach, kale, blueberries, olive oil, and salmon.
- Limit red meat, fried foods, and sugary snacks.
- We can assist with meal planning, grocery shopping, and healthy cooking to support your loved one’s brain health.
3. Keep the Mind Active – and Connected
The study also emphasised the power of mental stimulation and social engagement. Participants did puzzles, learned new skills, and connected with others regularly.
Care Tips:
- Try daily crosswords, brain games, or learning apps.
- Schedule regular visits, video calls, or outings to reduce isolation.
- Our carers can provide companionship, games, and gentle encouragement to keep minds stimulated.
